Our Witness is Back

As you may know, Ms. Isabel witnessed the crime we are working on. Now that she is back from Scotland, we will have a chance to question her and find out what she knows. We will probably do this on Wednesday.
For extra practice put these words in ABC order:
rottweiler
beagle
bloodhound
lop
dachsund
corgi
poodle
German shepard
dalmation
If you can tell me which word doesn't match the others I will give you five minutes extra break on Wednesday. You can use google for this.

Good News and Bad News
We filmed our first tv show, but production problems kept us off the air this week. We will try again for next week.
Our school football team, the Pioneers Hippos, took on a team of boys from other schools. All the other boys were as old or older than ours, including a seventh grader and a sixth grader, but our team prevailed 1-0. Great job by those boys. Omar Hejawi and Khaled Abu Gosh were the standouts.
We hope to arrange another match soon.
Next Week we will continue with our skin experiment, our crime story, work on alphabetical order, synonyms and antonyms, and start work on telling time. Nothing too challenging but a lot of fun coming up. Hopefully we will get a couple movie scenes filmed as well.

This Week
We will be continuing with our grammar review, the future tense using going to, and the new issue of the newspaper.
We will also be continuing the crime project. Here is the story:
Last night when Mr. Jon got home he found a Mr. Sean was knocked out. He called the police. The police said that someone had hit Mr. Sean. There were two witnesses.
A witness is someone who saw something about a crime. Maybe a witness saw someone buying a gun. Maybe the witness saw the crime.

The witness saw something so they have information that the police need. We are going to play a game with this crime. We are also going to learn all about the court system.
The first thing we are going to do is pretend we are the police. One job the police have is to
question the witnesses.
These are the questions the students wrote (I chose the best)
What happened?
How did you know the victim?
What information do the police need?
Do you know what the motive was?
Do you think the criminal was someone you knew?
Were there footprints on the ground?
Was Mr. Sean alone in the house?
When you came back did you see anyone next to your house?
Did you see someone running when you came?
What did you see?
How many were they?
What weapons did they use?
How did they use the weapons?
What did the suspect do?
Can you describe the suspect for me?
Is he short or tall?
Is the criminal old?
Did you see him before?
Is the criminal big or small?
Where is the suspect now?
Did the suspect have a gun?
Do you know the suspect?
Did you hear any voices?
How did the suspect come to Mr. Sean’s house?
Did you see him or her when he came to Mr. Sean’s house?
Where is the suspect right now?
When did the crime happen?
Did you see any evidence that fell off the criminal?
What was the suspect wearing?
What are the tools that the criminal used?
When did the crime happen?
Why did the criminal hate Mr. Sean?
Is Mr. Sean a friend of the criminals?

New Words Will Be Up Friday
So far only one student has completed the first 90 words.
This week we started investigating a crime. We were going to question witnesses on Wednesday but Ms. Maggie was sick so we had to work together with her class. We will question the witnesses soon and start getting ready for the trial.

A Note About the Science Fair
When my group presented their project, the powerpoint presentation we had prepared did not work due to technical difficulties. It was regrettable and I considered stopping the presentation until the powerpoint could be fixed.
In the end I decided not to for these reasons:
The first is that the Powerpoint was a supplement. Similar to the pictures in our student newspaper. They make things look nicer but the writing is the important part.
Likewise, the experiments that the students designed and explained were the important part and I was very proud of how they presented.
The second is that the kids were very nervous about presenting. All but two were working without a script and the delay would have made them much more nervous.
I am proud of all the students in my group but I wanted to metnion Tariq, Khaled, Waleed, Karma, and Eyad especially.
Tariq because he almost lost his lines due to nerves but when he had to, remembered and finished strong.
Eyad because this was the first thing he has done with the higher level group. He struggled at times but presented well.
Khaled, Waleed, and Karma all made key contributions to the design of the experiments. Three of the four experiments were designed by the students with little prompting.
I was very proud of all the students and feel that our first try at a science fair went well and we have something we can build on for next year.

This Week (PARENTS)
Last week we did a lot of work with adverbs, how to use them, and other parts of speech.
Thursday's tests, which I did not give the students notice of, looked great.
This week we are going to be doing a lot about facts, opinions, and the difference between them. To do that we are going to be using the framework of a crime and a trial.
Its a subject the kids like a lot and builds on one of the games we have been playing all year (Detective).
It also relates to the movie the kids wrote. Speaking of that, we have now brought Montasser, Amal, Na-El, Selim, and Malak into the writing process. The remainder of the students who haven't written anything will get a chance this week.
We will also be continuing our grammar review month. Most of the students can use the correct verbs and tenses if asked but need a lot of daily practice to get them right in conversation.
Also this week keep your eyes open for a note home that may relate to our long delayed home building project.

WORDS 61-90
These 30 words have a story with them. In every country what happens after a crime is different but a lot of things are the same. We are going to learn about what happens in America but a lot of it is the same as Palestine. Some things are very different though.
In class we play a game called Detective. A detective is a policeman that finds people he thinks are criminals. In every country what happens after a crime is different.
The people the detective thinks are criminals are called suspects. Sometimes the police know who the criminal is and sometimes they only think they do. Some suspects are criminals but some are not.
After he finds the suspects, he takes them to jail. The rooms in jail are called cells. The suspects stay there until it is time for court. Court is where lawyers and judges work.
A lawyer is a person whose job is to speak for you in court. It is important to have someone who is very smart to speak for you. Lawyers are very smart people. A judge is the boss of court.
When the suspect comes to the court, everyone wants to know if he is guilty or innocent. Guilty means the suspect did the crime. If you are guilty, you are a criminal. If you are innocent it means you are not a criminal.
If a suspect is innocent, it means the police made a mistake. If a suspect is innocent, he can go home after court. If a suspect is guilty, he has to go to jail after court.

Movie Script

Nine of the top students wrote a movie script earlier this year. We have been filming it slowly over the past month. Now all the other students have a chance to get into the movie.
There are two scenes that need to be written. Any student who wants to be in the movie can work on those scenes and, if there writing is good, they will get a part in the movie. All students have received the script (except for the original nine writers)
Newspaper Deadlines are on April 7, 2009 so the students who have regular assignments need to get them in.
