One of our class goals this year was for ten students to read 8 chapter books. The first student to complete eight books this year is Khaled Abu Gosh. Congratulations!
Yesterday there was no class so our students could participate in a set of tests administered by a researcher from Stanford University. Our students were favorably compared to the other students that had been tested in Palestine and the researchers were extremely impressed with their writing skills. I will try to post video of Iyad delivering his story later today
This week we have started practicing for a singing contest. There are two teams in the class. The first team is Khaled's group, Waleed's group, and Sami's group. The second team is Anibtawi's group, Sarah's group and Sindi's group.
Group 1 is singing: Big Mouth California Dreaming I'll Be Home for Christmas Super Girl Don't Cry Hey Hey We're the Monkees We're Not Gonna Take It One Jump (from Aladddin) A Pirate's Life Eternal Flame
Group 2 is singing: Enter Sandman People Are Strange Secret The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down Not Like Me King of the Road We Will Rock You November Rain Tingalayo Loch Lomond
We have started working with plants as well as fish. We are measuring the different inputs that our plants need and when we finish we will compare them with the fish and the rabbits.
This week's song is very famous in America. Many different singers and bands have played it.
Its called "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" It is a song about the American Civil War. Two parts of America fought each other because one part had slaves and one part didn't think that was right.
Dixie was what some people called the South (the part of the country that had slaves). We will be doing some more reading about this and we will be learning a song fron the North side (the good side) later this month.
Here are clips of two different people singing the song. The first is a woman named Joan Baez. She is a hero for a lot of people in America because she worked so many people could be equal:
This is by the group that made the song famous. Their name is "THE BAND." The Band is one of my favorite groups
We are going to focus heavily on matter and its properties. Last week the students displayed a solid understanding of how to measure things, but very weak estimating skills. We will continue to work on that.
We will be working with Chapters 10 and 11 in the Science book (probably 11 next week) and then building to a test on the properties of matter in two or three weeks, depending on how the kids do with the material.
We will be continuing our land use project and should have a new element of that as well. These are the words that we will be working with this week (many are repeats)
matter property pressure element atom periodic table mass volume density buoyancy input output calorie measure
Last week we finished Spin F. For the next two months we are going to be using Spin E to review. There are a few pages we will be doing together in class but mostly this will be homework.
This work should be simple for most of the students. if you don't understand something then bring it to me the next day. Periodically, I will collect and mark the Spin E books. Here is the homework schedule for this weekend and next week:
This weekend Page 10-13
Sunday night 14-15
Monday 18
Wednesday 20-22
Thursday 23,28,29
There will be additional homework some days. The Spin work should not take longer than 45 minutes for the most difficult nights and should usually be completed in less than 30. if it is taking longer let me know.
